Gotu Kola properties
Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) is a very important medicinal herb used in many Asian countries. This plant has been used in India, Indonesia and China for centuries. The name, Gotu Kola originates from ancient Chinese medical texts and means “miracle elixir of life”. In the nineteenth century, the extracts of this plant were added to the Indian pharmacopoeia where they were recommended for: better wound healing, the treatment of skin diseases, women’s health issues (missed periods, urogenital diseases), reducing a fever and stopping a diarrhea.
Gotu Kola bioactive compounds
The main bioactive compounds of Gotu Kola are saponins (alse called triterpenoids). Saponins are responsible for improving wound healing and the condition of blood vessels through increasing collagen production. The extract of Gotu Kola contains many active ingredients, for example: tannins, phytosterols (campesterol, sitosterol, stigmasterol), mucilages, resins, free aminoacids (alanine, serine, aspartate, glutamate, lysine and treonine), flavonoids (kaempferol derivatives), alkaloids, glycosides and unsaturated fatty acids.
Gotu Kola and wound healing
The extracts from Gotu Kola have been used for healing wounds for centuries and the newest research confirms their effectiveness. Pre-clinical studies show that the extracts of Centella asiatica used on rats’ open wounds (3 times a day for 24 days) caused increased cellular proliferation and collagen synthesis. The next studies also showed that a newly developed tissue has greater tensile strength. The extracts decrease the inflammation process which may result in scar overgrowth.
Effects on the nervous system
Gotu Kola is widely used in Asia as a sedative, anxiolytic and antidepressant. Its calming properties are connected with the presence of specific glycosides, brahmoside and brahminoside, whereas its anti-anxiety properties are mainly attributed to binding of cholecystokinin receptors. Animal studies show that the extracts of Gotu Kola reduce animal immobility time and affect the corticosterone level in the brain, acting as an antidepressant. It is also known that Centella asiatica increases the gamma-aminobutyric acid level, what can be beneficial in the anxiety treatment. After taking the extract for two months, patients’ mood and cognitive functions improved.
Animal studies showed that the Gotu Kola extracts inhibit stress induced stomach ulcers. Anti-ulcer properties were compared to famotidine (proton-pump inhibitor). Both a drug and a herbal extract reduced stomach ulcers depending on the dose. The further studies proved that fresh Gotu Kola juice can protect the gastric mucosa from the effects of such harmful substances as ethanol or aspirin. The extract administered orally twice a day for five days had the protective effects against the aforementioned factors.
Gotu Kola has been used in Asian medicine for years as an anti-inflammtory drug and a painkiller. Its effectiveness has been proved by the animal model studies. It was showed that taking the extracts reduced the prostaglandin E2 synthesis during the induced inflammatory response. Other studies confirmed that the extract helped to reduce the number of antibodies in rheumatoid arthritis.
A lot of clinical trials have been conducted on patients with various disorders. In many cases, the extracts of Centella asiatica have proved to be effective. The studies showed that the extracts help to prevent cardiovascular diseases as they can improve the integrity of vascular intima and microcirculation. It was also proved that the topical administration of Gotu Kola preparation has beneficial effects on decreasing the scarring seen during wound healing. Moreover, creams with the Gotu Kola extracts decrease the stretch marks that many women develop during pregnancy.
